In the 1950s Popular Electronics published an article for constructing what was then a rudimentary computer game. It consisted of 21 lights with a ‘player’ button and a ‘machine’ button. A player,,could light 1, 2, or 3 lamps, the “machine:” could then also light 1, 2, or 3, lamps, each taking turns. The object of the game was to avoid being forced into lighting the last, or 21st lamp The “machine” would invariably win.. It worked on the principle that within the number 21, there are 5 groups of 4, with 1 left over. The original game used a mechanical ‘stepping’ relay and ordinary pilot lamps.
